Businesses approach marketing in different ways, that’s obvious. Smaller businesses might be tempted to ignore digital channels as something that are expensive or take too long to get results, but it’s businesses of this size that can’t afford to ignore the benefits of good local marketing.
The whole point of marketing is to be where your audience is. If you only target certain locations you need to be specific with your strategy to avoid wasted time and budget.
Blinds of Preston came to us with an objective. Get more leads from Preston and Chorley, taking the website from nowhere online to regularly on page one of Search Engines. We were also tasked with getting to the bottom of why, with a perfectly good website, nothing had worked so far in getting the website seen by local customers.
The Brief
Blinds of Preston is a local company serving homeowners across Lancashire installing made to measure blinds. The final product always looks amazing and they’re highly reviewed online. To us, it seemed like they were doing everything right but still not getting the traction they were looking for.
The goal was straightforward: grow their leads and get them in front of more local people who were ready to purchase.
We’ve worked with small businesses in the home improvement sector for years and had the experience to know how to get started with a local SEO strategy that would get results.
Where We Started
To get started we went back to SEO basics. There was no point in starting a complex strategy without the fundamentals in place. Plus, starting with a basic audit would let us identify what the current problems were with the website.
The first thing we spotted was a <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex”> tag sitting on their site. In simple terms, this was telling search engines not to show their pages in results. This tag tells search engines don’t show this website to anybody, effectively making the website invisible and making any other marketing activity useless. The only way customers were finding the business was through word of mouth and Facebook. This seemingly small technical issue was costing them visibility and leads. We removed this immediately and began the process of getting them indexed as fast as possible.
With that error resolved we could continue getting the basics in place. We updated their SEO tags in line with best practices, something many people overlook but it’s simple and it helps. We made each tag relevant to the page, relevant for the user but made sure to include relevant local search terms to help improve their organic reach.
The strategy at this stage was SEO only, with the aim of building momentum first. More channels can always come later, once the foundations are solid. This saves money and helps naturally grow leads to prevent overwhelm and processing problems.
Showing Off Their Work
One of the most valuable things a local business has is proof that they are who they say they are and they can deliver a great product.
We added case studies to their website showcasing the work they’d already done for customers in their area. This did two things: it gave search engines more relevant, local content to index, and it gave potential customers a reason to trust them before picking up the phone or filling in the form.
People want to see that someone like them, in a home like theirs, got a great result. Case studies do that better than any sales content. Plus with it becoming more difficult to determine what’s real online with AI images becoming so common, real case studies and photographs from completed jobs are invaluable.
This is something unique to a business that can’t be faked, and has real impact with marketing. While these case studies are doing great work now organically, they can be repurposed into video, be used in email campaigns and be promoted on social media. Everything we do on the website is designed to be repurposed and used again, to help build a strong brand while keeping costs realistic for a small business.
The Results
Here’s what happened over the year:
- 77% increase in organic leads year on year, going from the occasional lead to a consistent stream of enquiries.
- 52% increase in organic visits to the homepage year on year
- 109% increase in organic impressions year on year
- 33% increase in organic clicks year on year
These results came from fixing the basics, targeting the right local search terms, and adding content that actually meant something to their potential customers. No paid ads. No big budget. Just a local SEO strategy and time.
Our client is happy with the results and has said repeatedly they’ve noticed how much busier it has been on their side. They left us a fantastic review:
